	Advocacy Piece: Environmental Values
You have been hired to develop an advocacy piece for an Ugly Animal Preservation Society
(http://uglyanimalsoc.com/).  You  need  to  select  one  of  their  mascot  animals
(http://uglyanimalsoc.com/meet-the-mascots/) and develop a narrative that will help to convince
the broader public that they should support a campaign to save and protect your selected mascot.
(note you cannot select manatees as your mascot, as examples will be provided for these).
You should assume that your audience will encompass the four environmentalist philosophies
described by Eckersley (1992) – 1) Resource Conservation; 2) Human Welfare Ecology; 3)
Preservationism; 4) Ecocentrism – and therefore you need to be crafty with your narrative,
ensuring that your discourse has elements that address the central concern of each of these
	philosophies.
In terms of structure, your paper should include a hook (an initial short paragraph to grab your
readers’ attention), a brief introduction of your selected mascot, and then an engaging and nuanced
explanation of why the reader should support a campaign to save and protect your selected mascot
(remembering that your readers will encompass Eckersley’s four different environmental
	philosophies).
Although not a specific requirement, you can be somewhat creative in terms of how you put your
pitch together; however, make sure that you have coherently structured paragraphs, and provide
	academic references as required.
This first essay task is designed to examine your understanding of different environmental values
and how they shape sustainability discourses.
A marking rubric can be found online, which outlines clearly the criteria that this assessment will
	be marked against.
The word length for this piece is between 1,200 to 1,500 words and this task will represent 30%
of the final grade for the course. You need to submit this essay via turn-it-in on Moodle.
Assignments must be submitted before 4pm on the 3 April 2017. Assignments received after this
time will be marked as having been received late.
