Critical Appraisal
Using an appropriate critical appraisal tool, critique each of the four papers under the following headings:
1. Introduction and background
• Identify the research question and a brief summary of the background. Is the research question clear? Is
the need for the study justified?
• Write a PICOT or PICOT variation for each paper
2. Style
• Briefly identify the study design and method, including the study population, and data collection method/s.
Are the data collection methods consistent with the stated research aims?
• Have the researchers shown evidence of objectivity, is there evidence of minimisation of bias?
• Where does the study rank in the NHMRC/JBI levels of evidence?
3. Results
• How the results are presented, are they clear and consistent with the research style? Can they be
generalised and applied to clinical practice?
4. Conclusions
• Have the authors discussed the results and drawn meaningful conclusions? Have the study limitations been
acknowledged?
5. Comment briefly on the author and journal credibility for each paper
• Choose only the first and last author and briefly cover expertise, affiliation, Scopus ranking, relevant
disclosure of any conflict of interest. Locate the Journal ranking, what does this suggest about the clinical
significance of the study?
Your assignment is to be presented as a report, with each paper covered separately. You are not required to include
an overall introduction and conclusion. It is recommended that you use headings and subheadings to structure your
paper. You are required to cite all additional sources used to support your critique, including your choice of critical
appraisal tool/s. Please refer to the attached rubric (page 3) for allocation of marks.
Appropriate referencing must be used (using APA 6 th style)
Include a title page with assignment details, topic, your student ID and actual word count. Please submit as a
