HSN101 Foundations of Food, Nutrition and Health
Assignment Instructions 2016
Rationale
Much of what we know about people’s diets and why people choose to eat what they eat is due to
nutrition research. In this assignment, you will have the opportunity to explore what influences your
eating behaviour and learn about what it is like to participate in nutrition research. You will answer
three questionnaires and a series of questions designed around your eating behaviour and your
experience in completing the questionnaires. The assignment is designed to stimulate your thoughts
on why you and others have developed certain eating patterns, how the environment affects food
choices and how nutrition research is conducted.
The Unit Learning Outcomes related to this assignment are:
ULO 1: Identify food and nutrition concepts such as food sources of nutrients, food and nutrient
recommendations and the impact of food and nutrition on population health.
ULO 3: Identify food and nutrition concepts and apply them to the improvement of population
health.
ULO 4: Evaluate and discuss methods for measuring food intakes and behaviours and identify factors
that influence food choice.
ULO 5: Apply effective written and oral communication skills to communicate foundation knowledge
in food, nutrition and health.
For this assignment, you will need to complete three online questionnaires (Food and Diet
Questionnaire, Food Frequency Questionnaire and Likes and Dislikes Questionnaire) that gather
dietary, behavioural, demographic and food liking information. Your responses to these
questionnaires will then form the basis of the written and video components of this assignment.
You will be given specific questions to answer in the “HSN101 Assignment Form” (available on the
HSN101 CloudDeakin site through the Articulate Storyline presentation called “HSN101 Assignment
Description” in the “Assignment” folder). Carefully read through the questions in the “HSN101
Assignment Form” and ensure you address each question to maximise your mark for the assignment.
Answers along the lines of “I just don’t like fruit” will not maximise your grade. There are usually
more in-‐depth explanations for eating behaviours.
There are 4 steps to completing this assignment:
Step 1. Complete three online questionnaires
• Please complete three different questionnaires: a Food and Diet Questionnaire, a Food
Frequency Questionnaire and a Likes and Dislikes Questionnaire. All of these questionnaires need
to be completed online.
• To access the questionnaires, you will need to use the questionnaire URL sent to your Deakin
University email address during week 2 of the trimester (You will receive ONE email
containing the link to the 3 surveys).
• Make sure you complete the questionnaires accurately.
• PRINT your completed questionnaires; you will need this information to complete the rest of
your assignment. At the end of the online questionnaires, you will see the following message
(Figure 1). Please be sure to click on the button (circled below in Figure 1). You will then be

directed to a summary of your responses and a link (circled below in Figure 2) to enable you to
download your PDF.

Step 2. Prepare a draft of the written component of your assignment and assess this against the
assignment rubric
In preparation for submitting your assignment, please prepare the written component of your
assignment ahead of time and assess it against the “HSN101 Assignment Rubric”.
• Download the “HSN101 Assignment Form” and the “HSN101 Assignment Cover Page_Draft” from
the “HSN101 Assignment Description”, which is in the “Assignment” folder on the HSN101
CloudDeakin site.
• Prepare a draft of the written component of your assignment using the questionnaire output you
downloaded at the end of Step 1, the “HSN101 Assignment Form” and the “HSN101 Assignment
Cover Page_Draft”. Within the “HSN101 Assignment Form”, you will be given specific questions
to answer, many of which relate back to the responses you provided in the Food and Diet, Food
Frequency and Likes and Dislikes Questionnaires. You will need to use your saved or printed copy
of your responses to the online questionnaires to answer these questions.
• The “HSN101 Assignment Form” has suggested word counts for each question. It is important
that you can summarise your response within the suggested word allowance for each question in
order to remain within the overall word limit of 1300 words. The marker will stop marking your
assignment at 1300 words as noted in the “HSN101 Assignment Rubric”.
• You will need to use references in your assignment. These should be in Vancouver style. To do
this, you will need to provide in-‐text referencing to support the statements made within your
written responses to some questions. Note there is also a blank section titled “References” at the
end of the “HSN101 Assignment Form”. Provide your corresponding reference list there. For

assistance with Vancouver style, please use the link “Referencing using Vancouver style” available
in the “Assignment” folder on the HSN101 CloudDeakin site.
• Download the “HSN101 Assignment Rubric” from the “HSN101 Assignment Description”, which is
in the “Assignment” folder on the HSN101 CloudDeakin site. Assess your assignment draft against
the “HSN101 Assignment Rubric” and add your marks to the final column of the rubric. Assistance
with interpreting the rubric will be provided in HSN101 seminars.
• Combine three files to create the draft of your written component of your assignment: the
“HSN101 Assignment Cover Page_Draft”, “HSN101 Assignment Form”, and your completed
“HSN101 Assignment Rubric”. Save this document as a PDF using the following file name:
“Lastname_HSN101_draft”.
• Upload this file (“Lastname_HSN101_draft”) to the “AT3 HSN101 WRITTEN Component DRAFT”
dropbox on CloudDeakin by 5:00 pm on the 26 th April 2016.
Step 3. Complete the video component of the assignment
• Please refer to the “HSN101 Assignment Form” for the topic of the video component of your
assignment.
• You can film your video presentation on any mobile device (phone/tablet) or computer software.
It is also important to note that your device may limit the length of your video (tablets may only
be able to email a video of less than 1 minute).
o If necessary, you can also borrow HD HANDY VIDEO RECORDER from Deakin University:

• Save this file as an MP4 using the following file name: “Lastname_HSN101_video”.
• Mac users can submit their videos as mv4 files
• Upload this file (“Lastname_HSN101_video”) to the “AT3 HSN101 Final Assignment” dropbox on
CloudDeakin by 5:00 pm on 2 nd May 2016.
Step 4. Revise and finalise the written component of the assignment based on your assessment of
your assignment against the assignment rubric
• Please use your own assessment of your assignment in order to revise your assignment prior to
submission.
• Download the “HSN101 Assignment Cover Page_Final” from “HSN101 Assignment Description”,
which is in the “Assignment” folder on the HSN101 CloudDeakin site, and attach this cover sheet
in place of the “HSN101 Assignment Cover Page_Draft”.
