Write an academic essay that explains how and why a particular phenomenon or socio-cultural movement developed. The essay should demonstrate your understanding of the topic from various perspectives, and your ability to structure your response according to the conventions taught in this subject. |

This essay is intended to provide you with an opportunity to: · Locate and choose information for relevancy, currency and validity · Articulate your ideas using your critical thinking and analytical skills in understanding and responding to the question. · Reference sources correctly using UTS Harvard referencing style · Write and present information clearly, using appropriate structure andacademic writing skills. It is important, therefore, to develop your work beyond description. |

Explain how a particular phenomenon or sociocultural movement changed over time. Present reasons why this happened. Consider what historical events, cultural attitudes, specific people, technology or media have helped this movement /phenomenon to develop. |
Research framework questions: |
Cultural adaption – how do societies adapt to change? Cultural traditions brought in from other cultures – how do other cultures change society? Human innovation and invention – how does human creativity change society? Environmental and economic effects – how does the environment or the economy bring social change? |

Research topics: |
Using the list at the end of the brief OR a topic of your choice, research a sociocultural phenomenon or movement from the last 117 years (since 1900) that is relevant to your future study and / or career. The topic should begin BEFORE 1996 because you will need to evaluate changes over the last 20-30 years. |

Instructions: |
To prepare and write this essay, you should ensure that it is: a) Well researched – you must refer to AT LEAST six relevant and reliable sources to support your ideas. These can be texts such as books, journal articles, magazine articles, web articles, videos or recordings. b) Logically structured – following the conventional essay format, your explanation should not only relate to and develop your position on the topic, but it should also be supported with evidence (eg references to authorities in the field, explanations and/or examples) c) Appropriately expressed – you should use a formal academic style, and ensure grammatical accuracy d) Accurately referenced – you need to follow the UTS Harvard system of referencing to cite your sources. |
