    Marx’s account of capitalism was developed in the nineteenth century, well before the advent of television. How useful are classical Marxist concepts in making sense of television and its consumption? Critically apply one of Marx’s concepts (such as ideology, commodity fetishism, class and class conflict, use value, exchange value, etc) to a television text, evaluating its usefulness and limitations.

    In “Lifestyle and Consumer Culture,” Mike Featherstone argues, “The modern individual within consumer culture is made conscious that he speaks not only with his clothes, but with his home, furnishings, decorations, car and other activities which are to be read and classified in terms of the presence and absence of taste.” What does Featherstone mean by “the presence and absence of taste” here? Discuss with reference to Bourdieu and 1 example from consumer culture.
