Guide to the BIOC6006 Epigenetics Literature Review assignment
Word limit maximum: Abstract – 200 words; rest of review - 800 words (1000
words maximum in total). Put word count on front page of your review.
This literature review will require you to submit a written paper on your
interpretations and understanding of a research paper in epigenetics. This is an
exercise in scientific communication, not just to other scientists and academics,
but to members of the general public who may know very little (or absolutely
nothing!) about science, genetics, or biology.
An innovative paper on epigenetics will be selected by the module coordinator
for you to review in this assignment – please check Blackboard and attend the
Literature Review workshop lecture with Dr Jack Wang (t.wang1@uq.edu.au)!
Writing the review paper
Using the topic provided by the paper that you select as your focus, you will write a
review of 1,000 words. Your review should include:
1. An abstract (200 words maximum) written in your own words, that describe
the main scientific findings in the paper using language that non-scientists can
understand. This abstract is supposed to quickly reveal the importance of the
research done in the paper, and attract others to read your literature review
(and the original research paper) in more detail. An abstract should include:
a. 2-3 sentences on field of research, what problems it’s trying to address,
and why these problems are important
b. 1-2 sentences explaining any scientific jargon you intend to use
c. 3-4 sentences highlighting main experimental findings of article
d. 1-2 sentences on significance of these findings and future outcomes
2. A background description of the field of research your research article is
covering. This involves answering questions like:
a. What are the main research questions scientists are trying to answer in
this field?
b. Why is this field of research important?
c. What key findings have been made so far?
Any key scientific jargon (E.g. gene/protein names, biological processes) will
need to be explained in every-day language as well as properly referenced.
3. Detailed description of main experimental findings in the research article.
You should include figures from your research paper that directly show the
results of experiments performed (make sure these figures are properly
referenced!). You will not have enough space to go over all of the results in
the paper in this literature review, so it is important you pick out the major
experimental findings only and discuss them in detail.
4. Discussion of the significance and future outcomes of the scientific
findings made in your research article. You need to interpret the
experiments in your research article, compare these results to previously
published literature, and be able to explain to a member of the general public
what these findings mean to them. Being able to express the future outcomes
and significance of scientific research is crucial to applying for grant funding to
conduct research, so you need to start developing this ability now!
***As previously stated, the total word count for this assignment is 1000 words. This
will include 200 words for your abstract, and 800 words for the remainder of your
review. Do not include references or figure legends in the word count.
Examples of the type of review we are looking for can be found in the "coffeebreak"
modules at NCBI. These are educational reviews that are in common language and
are of interest to specialists and non-specialists alike.

Notice that the coffeebreak reviews are almost completely free of scientific jargon,
but despite the fact that simple language is used, the tone of the articles is very
professional. This is an example of excellent scientific communication. Your review
should likewise demonstrate that you understand the topic so well that you can use
general language that can be readily understood by a person who knows nothing
about the field. Writing simply and clearly in an engaging style without sacrificing
accuracy is an essential skill for any successful scientist.
You should use figures to augment your review as well. Your figures should be clear
and intuitively descriptive. Comprehensive figure legends should also be included
that fully explain the figures. If you use someone else's images, clearly acknowledge
them and include a link to the work from which the image was obtained.
