Select a short sequence from one of the films that we have studied in the

first six weeks of the unit. Describe and analyse one or some of the

formal elements of this sequence. What these formal elements might be

will depend on the film, but it could be such things as the editing, the use

of sound, the lighting, depth of field, framing, point of view shots, voice-

over, set design, colour. What significance can be drawn from this formal

element (or these formal elements)? What meanings or effects do they

create? How do they relate to the thematic concerns of the film? These

questions are just some suggestions. The kind of questions you could

explore will depend upon your selected sequence and the film. As the

word length is quite short I suggest that you focus your analysis as much

as you can, do not try to cover too many different topics or formal

elements.
