    Editing For Writers CRWR 2004
    4th Assignment
    Structural Report and Re-edit
Students will be required to edit a supplied creative work and write a 2000 word report on that editing process, analysing the supplied work in terms of structure and literary techniques (eg character, point of view, language, imagery) and setting out the reasons for the changes they have made.
The report will be in the form of a letter to the author.
This task will extend the skills from the shorter assessment exercises and class work so that students can demonstrate the specialised understanding required to undertake a structural editing process and understand the author-editor relationship.
    • Edit piece of writing posted on MyUni and write 2,000 word report on your editing process in form of letter to author.
    • First, in letter/report analyse supplied work in terms of structure and writing techniques (eg character, point of view, language, imagery).
    • Suggest in letter/report possible ways to edit the piece and set out reasons for the changes suggested.
    • Write letter/report to take into account the ways in which editors support and encourage writers to improve a work.
    • Include edited version of piece with any specific editorial suggestions marked on it.
    Word count: 2000 words.
    Notes on Final assignment
I have posted a creative piece on MyUni for you to work with for the final assignment. The creative piece bears an author name which isn’t that author’s real name, but that is obviously the name to use for the purposes of the assignment.
It is a short story, so it gives you an opportunity to deal with plot issues, as well as point of view, the way plot lines and characterisation may be developing, movement between scenes, narrative voice, writing style, tone and pace, dialogue, setting, symbolism and imagery, and sentence structure, title, and if there are any potential legal issues to be dealt with.
You are being asked to do a structural edit of this creative piece and write a 2,000 word report on your editing process.
First, you should analyse the supplied work in terms of structure and writing techniques (eg character, point of view, language, imagery). This is so you are clear in your report that you comprehend the text and, therefore, your suggested changes are based on a considered understanding of the text and the ways it works well as it is, and the ways it can be improved.
You should then suggest possible ways to edit the piece and set out your reasons for the changes you have suggested.
This will be a report will be in the form of a letter to the author. You should write the letter in a manner that takes into account the ways in which editors support and encourage writers. You might wish to address other issues we have touched on in the course such as markets and genres, if you think that is applicable.
You should also include an edited version of the piece with your editorial suggestions marked on it in whatever way you choose - mark-up by hand or use of track changes in Word. You may include grammar and style changes, if there are any, but the primary focus is on structure.
I am looking for you to show that you understand what is involved in structural editing, and also that you understand the nature of an effective and productive author-editor relationship.
