Goals of Assignment

1. Work through the formulation of a term paper question.

2. Identify the scope of the paper and specific search strategy.

3. Familiarize yourself with a search strategy to effectively research your topic.

The scope of the term paper and library research approaches will be discussed more

thoroughly in class. If you have any concerns about your proposed topic, I encourage

you to speak with me before the proposal assignment is due.

Suggested Approaches

1. Focus on one taxon (species, genus, etc.) investigating how it has changed

overtime: what physical and biological limiting factors impact its distribution; how

have the distribution changed over time; and what are the hypotheses explaining

these changes? For example: How has the distribution of the horse changed

overtime?

2. Focus on a specific location investigating what plants, mammal, birds,

invertebrate, or other taxonomic group are currently present: how has this

changed over a given time period (i.e. since the last glaciation); what are the physical

conditions of this location; how have these conditions changed over time; and what

is the impact of these changes on the taxa of interest? For example: How has the

vegetation of Southern Ontario changed since the last glaciation?

3. Focus on humans’ impact on a given taxa or the diversity in a particular location.

For example: How have humans impacted the biota of New Zealand since the first

Polynesians arrived?

4. Another approach of your choosing, with prior approval.

student number are on your assignment. You do not need a cover page.

Remember to upload it to turnitin.com and bring a paper copy to class.

1. Provide a title that communicates the focus of your paper (1 mark). You do not need

a separate title page.

2. In an introductory paragraph, clearly state your research question and briefly

address the scope of the project (4 marks).

3. Explain in a second paragraph why this question is worth addressing: what is the

biogeographical relevance of the question (5 marks)?

4. Complete and turn in the results of steps A through D of the search strategy (5

marks).

Search Strategy

To be completed as part of paper proposal:

A. Turn in a list of (at least) seven key words or phrases based on the topic identified.

B. Search article databases using your key words and phrases

C. Examine results of initial searches by looking at the first 20 to 30 results.

(If nothing appropriate turns up, then try revising key words and/or search other

databases.)

D. Turn in a list of (at least) three scholarly journal articles you will likely include in your

paper.

To be completed once you get the “green light” for your paper topic:

E. Read and take notes on the references found.

F. Conduct a follow-up searches; determine which papers cite and which papers are

cited by the most relevant articles from your initial search.
