    Principles of Responsible Business
    Reflective Journal – Sample 2
Before starting this course, I was blissfully unaware of our planet’s sustainability issues and
the long-term implications of our way of life. In saying that, I question whether it was that I
was “unaware” or rather chose not to listen; as it would mean I felt a responsibility to change
my lifestyle which I was not prepared to do.
I have grown up with minimal regard to my impact on the environment and bought up with a
reasonably high-consumption lifestyle. Annie Leonard’s “the story of stuff” identified the
issues of more and more people living such a lifestyle (Creative Commons, 2013). In many
people’s lives, consumption seems to be the driver of our economy and happiness. I have
been working full time for the past two years and have spent every last cent on clothing and
materialistic items that are often discarded after a year or two. My pay would come through
on the first day of the month and I would be at the shops ready to spend it all in the first
    week.
I have to a certain extent thought that this lifestyle was ‘normal’ up until this course. Keeping
up with friends from school and the influence that social media has now with constant
updates on season trends. However, it is interesting to see the differences in lifestyles and
opinions from the lectures and tutorials. Many students are well educated and strong
advocates of building a sustainable future and I have only just become conscious of the
    issue.
One area I was completely unaware of was the number of endangered fish which I regularly
eat. After looking at the endangered fish to avoid eating, I was surprised to read that flake
and swordfish were both on the endangered list (Natural Strategies Group Pty Ltd, 2013).
These are two types of fish that Mum and I will often cook during the week. I would imagine
that flake is the most commonly sold fish at fish and chip stores as it was always the fish of
choice for us as a family and I’m sure most of the local and wider community. It has definitely
made me reconsider my choices when choosing fish to buy and I will not be purchasing
anything on the list in future.
My ecological foot print and future scapes (The Gould League, 2013) was a real eye-opener.
If everyone lived like me, we would need 4.2 planets to survive (EPA Victoria, 2012). The air
would be heavily polluted along with the water in which fish could not be eaten. There would
be few animals and plants left to enjoy and the overall future would look very dull and
lifeless. After hearing in a lecture that someone had compared their ecological footprint with
their grandmother’s, I decided to try the same thing. I sat with my grandmother as she went
through the calculator and it was interesting to see our differences in lifestyles. However,
her number of planets required was only reduced to 3.9 when she had a much lower
consumption level than me. This only re-emphasises the fact that Australia has a real
problem with our high-consumption levels and therefore pollution to the environment,
    especially in the long run.

Many of the third world countries admire our luxuries and growing economy and aspire to
catch up with us, but imagine the consequences if all countries lived like Australia and the
United States. It is unfair that we are living a lifestyle that requires 4 planets and the
developing countries may not even have enough drinking water or a decent roof over their
heads. It is easy to ignore international social justice issues (as I have ashamedly done in
the past), because we think it does not affect us and we can’t see it, but we should put things
into perspective and begin noticing the extreme economic, environmental and social
differences. If countries like United States and Australia continue living the way we do and
increasing consumption, polluting our air and water, our long-term future is looking very
    grimm.
I know that I will be changing a few things in my life to try and change my impact on our
    long-term future.
