Overview

This assignment is designed to assist students’ learning in relation to an experience in

accessing, evaluating and critically appraising demographic/population literature and

statistics; conveying information in an effective, proper and concise manner; and developing

an academic referencing style. Note that this assignment is to be completed as an individual

piece of work.

Students will be required to write up a short essay on one of the recommended topics

below. If students wanted to propose their own topic, then it should be first consulted with

your tutor/lecturer. The recommended four topics are:

 Are humans mainly responsible for global warming?

 Should the borders be closed or open?

 Is dual citizenship good for a society?

 Is obesity a disease?

Structure & Submission

Format: The essay should range from between 3-4 pages or 1500-2000 words in length (size

11 or 12 times new roman font, single line spacing). Each page should include the registered

student name and ID number that are printed at top of page along with the essay’s title.

Reference: To support your essay, information should only be taken from academic and

recognized resources (e.g. books, peer reviewed journals, national/international

newspapers, formal websites). The information needs to support you in identifying and

evaluating the dimensions, opportunities/challenges brought about by the selected topics

mentioned above. You must correctly reference the article both in-text as an in-text citation

using the MLA, APA, Chicago, or Harvard style, as well as at the end of your essay by

including a full reference to the article (i.e. need to be a consistent style).

Submission: All students must submit their hard copy essays to the tutor. The soft copy

must be uploaded through Turnitin by using the link on iLearn by 11.59pm on the due date.

Assessment Criteria

The assignment will be marked on the following criteria: content coverage, relevance,

presentation and structure, provision of overview, discussion and original thought,

referencing, adherence to length limits, avoidance of plagiarism, and adherence to timelines

for submission. The essay is worth for 15% of the course grade. Assessment criteria and

standards for the short essay are attached (also available on iLearn).
