Reflective Learning Journal
Assessment Overview
Marks: 20% of total marks (split across submissions as shown below).
Word limit: Required word count for each submission outlined below.
For each task, +/- 10% of the word limit is acceptable.
Details for each submission:
Note: This is an individual assessment item.
Learning Journal Entries
You are required to submit a total of three (3) learning journal entries, as outlined
above.
The purpose of this assessment task is to consider the issues examined in class and in
the weekly reading for the topics studied, and use this understanding to write a
reflective summary. A reflective summary is not simply a summary of the reading.
Reflective thinking requires you to consider the key points and issues and to critically
evaluate and apply them.
Each journal entry should include the following content:
1. Learning: what I have learnt? Reflection on learning from lecture, tutorial and
assigned journal reading for the topic.

2. Relevance: how relevant is the topic of study? This should include a discussion
of strengths and weaknesses of the key theories/ideas/concepts for the topic.
You will need to make reference to the assigned journal readings for the topic.
3. Reflection: to what extent do the concepts/ideas and theories reflect what
happens in my work place? (If you are not currently working, then reflect upon
a previous place of employment or an organisation for which you are familiar).
How can I make use of this learning in a future situation? For this section you
may choose to focus on one or two key aspects of the topic.
Formatting Instructions
Each learning journal entry must be typed, using 12-point font and a line spacing of
1.5. Pages should be numbered. References should follow the Harvard (Author-Date)
system of referencing. Useful information and guidance on referencing can be found
on the Academic Skills website or by following the links in the Assessment area on
CloudDeakin.
The required learning journal entry should include:
• Topic covered
• Content (organised under the numbered content headings above)
• Reference List (including the assigned journal article for the chosen topic)
As this is a reflective exercise, students may write in the first person (use of “I” is ok;
for example, “I think that the manipulation of corporate culture plays an important role
at my place of work because ….”). The learning journal entry should be set out in
paragraph writing (ie. no dot points or “lists”).
Marking Criteria
Below are the criteria against which each journal entry will be assessed. All journal
entries should pay attention to grammar, spelling and sentence structure, along with
appropriate referencing.
Learning Relevance
• Analytical discussion of the topic (not
just a description or summary).
• Discussion includes reflection of
lecture content, tutorial activities,
and assigned reading.
• Discussion of what you think are the strengths and
weaknesses of the key theories/ideas and
concepts for the topic.
• Discussion is linked to the assigned reading.
Reflection Presentation
• Discussion of the extent to which the
topic illuminates aspects of
organizational behaviour at your
place of work.
• Discussion of how you might make
use of learning in a future situation.
• Correctly formatted and proper attention given to
spelling, grammar and sentence structure.
• Where appropriate, references are used to
support arguments and ideas.
• References are formatted according to Harvard
system of referencing.

Submission and Assessment Policy
Each reflective journal entry is to be submitted online by each student in the provided,
individual assignment drop box in CloudDeakin (ie. there will be a separate dropbox
area for each of the three journal submissions). A single attachment with the
required content should be submitted.
Assignments are on time if they are submitted online by the due date. Test the
assignment submission area ahead of the due date to be sure your computer is
functioning correctly. It is your responsibility to locate a properly functioning PC to
submit the assignment on time.
Academic Honesty
You will be asked to confirm the following declaration relating to academic honesty
when you make your online submission:
“I certify that the attached work is entirely my own (or, where submitted
to meet the requirements of an approved group assignment, is the work
of the group), except where material quoted or paraphrased is
acknowledged in the text. I also declare that it has not been submitted
for assessment in any other unit or course.”
Extensions and Late Submissions
No extensions will be considered for assignment submission due dates unless a written
request is submitted to and negotiated with the unit chair. Assignments submitted late
without an extension being granted will not be marked.
Return of marked assignments and requests for reviews
Your assignment will be marked, commented upon and returned to you online within
15 working days of the due date of the assignment. All variances to due date initiated
by students, whether negotiated or otherwise, mean that feedback may not be
returned in time for the final examination.
Please note that before results are returned to you, the teaching team will have
applied methods to ensure that the standards by which your work has been assessed
are the same for all students enrolled in the unit. You may request additional
information from assessors or checks on addition or recording errors within 15 working
days after your results have been returned to you. Please contact the unit
chair/coordinator directly.
