Read one of the African novels on the LMS document (or find another with tutor's approval). We are interested in novels not academic texts or textbooks. In 1,000 words, write a “book review” of the work. Show how the book presents Africa and African life, and offer your own critical observations of the book.

The aim is to get you into the habit of reading critically, by providing a review of a novel that is written by an African author, or describes/is set in Africa.
Try to be selective in your choice of book; choose something you actually want to study. Reviews should always be written as though they are going appear in an academic journal. This means full bibliographic details at the top, and your name visible. Have a look at how academic reviews in that and other journals are structured.  It goes without saying that I expect you to read the book! Avoid any previously published  reviews of it (and especially student reviews) on the web or in journals.

    Reviews are marked on
    ï      quality of your analysis
ï      structure of your review - move from an introduction to the key points you wish to make, then conclude.
    ï      proper bibliography (if needed)
ï      good use of sources (if needed)- proper citation of ideas and quotations
ï      no plagiarism or misuse of sources and web sites
ï      We will award minimal % for good presentation.

The majority of marks will be awarded for the quality of your analysis of the book. So make sure you set the book in context (author’s reputation? Place where it is set? is it part of a series etc.?), describe its contents in brief, before offering critical judgments.
Usually reviewers have a good knowledge of the subject matter of the piece they are reviewing. So you might need to read around the subject a little, research the author, or look into any historical episodes that are described, in order to feel confident in your opinions.
