What you have to do
You have completed the learning outcomes for this course by successfully completing the following units of work NSWTESL402, 403 and 404.
To finalise this unit you need to complete an assessment to demonstrate your appropriate use of analysing and writing texts in an online and digital context.
To complete this assessment you need to complete four tasks, which you will upload as four separate Word documents, to the OLS site for your teacher to mark.
The tasks are:
· A table detailing the time spent in various activities using the computer and internet during the unit of work 404A.
· A pie chart showing the distribution of the time spent on these various activities
· A search of three websites for tertiary institutions in Australia, providing details of which website was the easiest to navigate.
· Two emails requesting information to two of the tertiary institutions you have chosen.
Tasks
Task 1 – Reflection on the amount of time you have devoted to online and computer work for 404A.
This task requires you to make a table showing how much time you have spent on the computer for the unit of work: 404A - Writing for Academic Purposes.
Please complete the following:
1. Open a new Word document.
2. Make a table with five columns and two rows.
3. Make the following
title for your table:
Time taken online and computer work 404A
4. Use the following headings for your
columns:
Unit 404 A
Internet for study
OTEN site reading course material
Assessment tasks on the computer
Other unrelated internet usage
5. In the second
row make a heading:
Time taken (hours). This just needs to be approximate.
6. Fill in each column. Please note this is just an estimate.
7. When you have finished, save the table.
8. You will now have a table detailing the time spent in various activities during 404A, as follows:
· How much time you spent using the internet for study;
· How much time you spent on the computer using the OTEN site to read required material for the unit of work 404A;
· How much time you spent on the computer completing assessment tasks;
· How much time you spent on the internet for other purposes.
9. Save and give your Word document a suitable title.
Task 2 – Creation of a pie chart.
This task requires you to make a pie chart using the information from the table you have made in Task one.
Please complete the following:
1. Using the table from Task one please make a pie chart.
2. If you have never made a pie chart before please use “Google” or another search engine and type “how to make a pie chart with (insert your software e.g. Microsoft Word).”
Please note this is the most common method of finding out how to do tasks on the computer.
3. Open a new Word document.
4. Create a pie chart. Include a
key to show what each section means.
5. Save your pie chart as a Word document with an appropriate title that reflects the content of the pie chart.
Task 3 – Analysis of the websites of three tertiary institutions in Australia.
This task requires you to find three websites for three different tertiary institutions in Australia and think about how easy they are for you to find information.
Please complete the following:
1. Please locate websites for three tertiary institutions in Australia. They may be universities, TAFE colleges or private providers.
2. Spend some time on each website and think about how easy or difficult it is to navigate (i.e. to find relevant information that you might need, such as course information, cost, how the course is structured etc.).
3. Open a new Word document.
4. Copy the URL of each website and beside it write the date you accessed it.
5. Write a short summary or make notes describing which website was the easiest for you to find relevant information and why.
6. Save this document and give it a suitable title that reflects the content of the file.
Task 4 – Write in a safe and responsible manner in a public online environment.
This task requires you to demonstrate that you can write online documents in an appropriate way. You will write two emails to two of the institutions you have chosen above. The first will request further information about a course of your choice and the second will request further information about online learning for a course of your choice.
Please complete the following:
1. Write each email.
2. Please include a suitable
subject line.
3. Please make sure the content of the email uses
appropriate language for your request.
4. Include a suitable
opening and closing for each email.
5. Please
be clear about the
purpose of each email.
6. Then copy and paste each email into one Word document.
7. Include the
subject line that you chose for each email and also the email
address of each institution.
8. Save the document with an appropriate title.
9. It is up to you whether you actually send the emails or not.
