Overview of socio cultural
theory
EDMT 6633 Family, Community &
Contexts Lecture 2 – 9 th March 2016
• Social constructivist approaches to learning recognise the child as a co-constructor of
meaning and knowledge.
• Childhood is a social construction. These approaches recognise that the child’s
construction of meaning and understanding is mediated and modified by social
interactions within their families, communities and environments.
• Using a social constructivist approach, teachers make decisions about co-constructing
learning based on the recognition that learning takes place in authentic and real world
situations.
Socio Cultural Theory
Themes in sociocultural learning
theories
Eun (2010) identifies three themes:
1. The importance of home-school connections
2. The interactive, collaborative, dynamic, and dialogical
nature of teaching and learning (Obuchinie)
3. Recognition of teaching and learning as a process (not
a product)
Examples of sociocultural learning
• Bandura
• Vygotsky
