Assessment 3 – Portfolio and Self-Assessment
The marking criteria and standards have been developed to guide you through the assessment process. Please read the criteria and standards carefully in the Learning Guide (pages 18-21).
Students must not resubmit their previously developed electronic portfolio.
You will need to provide a question and answer format. You do not need to write out the questions in full for your assessment submission. You only need to provide your answers to each of the questions. For example;
Question 1. Then you can start to write your answer here, OR,
Q1. Then you can start to write your answer here
The portfolio self-assessment has four components:
1. A summary statement assessing your progress to this point in your degree.
2. A summary table or paragraph of select NMBA statements or domains that you consider reflect areas of personal strength in professional development, supported by a statement of what was learned, competency gained, or skill achieved, with examples from practice.
3. A summary table or paragraph of select NMBA statements or domains that you consider are your priorities for further development, supported by a statement of what areas of learning, competency or skill you intend to develop, with examples.
4. A summary statement of strategies to promote continuing professional development.
What is included in each section of the portfolio self-assessment?
Summary statement: The purpose of the portfolio self-assessment at this point in your career - i.e., preparing for graduate practice. Stating the purpose of the self-assessment will help to prioritise what is personally relevant to discuss from the NMBA framework in the following sections.
Strengths: Limit your scope to the new graduate experience. For example, nurses and midwives practice in accordance with legislation relevant to practice. It may be a personal strength to know how to collect and record data; to question and clarify orders.
Further development: As a new graduate there will be a need to seek advice in order to practice safely and competently. For example, giving medications, responding to rapidly changing situations, determining priorities of care, and delegating to others.
Strategies:What do you need to do in order to prepare for registration with AHPRA in the first twelve months as a new graduate registered nurse? What CPD opportunities will you pursue to work

in the context of nursing of your choice beyond the first year of practice? This will vary for different
clinical settings. Finally, what career options are you considering beyond the new graduate year? It is
important to plan your career objectives.
What does a summary table look like?
For questions 3 and 4 you can choose to use a summary table for your answer. You can set the table up
like this.
Question 3.
NMBA statements or domains
that you consider reflect areas of
personal strength in professional
development
Examples from practice Statement of what was learned,
competency gained, or skill
achieved
Question 4.
NMBA statements or domains
that you consider are your
priorities for further development
Examples from practice Statement of what areas of
learning, competency or skill you
intend to develop
Can I write in the first person?
The first section and final section of the self-assessment involve personal reflection and the first
person voice is appropriate. The second and third section can be written in either the first or third
person as you are assessing and evaluating your progress and expressing this in terms of outcomes
with personal examples.
Do I have to write in sentences and paragraphs or can I use bullet points?
The first section (the summary statement) and final section (statement of strategies for ongoing
professional development) are written in academic paragraphs with references. The second section
(on strengths) and third section (on areas for development) can be written as a table or in paragraphs,
and bullet points in full sentence form are acceptable.

How do I decide which NMBA statements and domains to include?
Start with the Code of Professional Conduct. Then review the National Competency Standards and Code of Ethics. What will be different as a new graduate compared with being a student? The Guide to Professional Boundaries should be applied to the context of practice you are interested in or where you will work for your new graduate program.
Each student’s priorities will be different depending on your academic achievement, clinical competence, and level of clinical experience. The focus should be the transition from student to graduate practice. Aspects to consider include changes in accountability, responsibility, autonomy and scope of practice, from student to new graduate.
Do I have to submit a curriculum vitae (CV) and documentary evidence of CPD?
No. You are assessing and evaluating your progress with preparation for registration, rather than recording your employment history and professional development.
Where do I find information to include in the self-assessment?
Many students will have an e-portfolio already set up that includes your curriculum vitae, record of continuing professional development, and reflective statements about your clinical placement experiences. The content of your portfolio is not being assessed in this assignment. You are assessing and evaluating what you have achieved to date. If your portfolio is not up-to-date, then reflect on the knowledge, competencies and skills achieved in the CPU during your PPE units and recent clinical placement experience. Your clinical portfolio (BN link below) or continuity of care case notes (BM link below) provides you ready access to examples of skill and knowledge development over the three years of study for the bachelor degree. The guiding purpose is to self-assess your professional progress against the evidence of these documents and the regulatory standards of practice (e.g. the NMBA frameworks).

Why do I have to do a portfolio self-assessment?
The self-assessment provides final year students with an opportunity to assess and evaluate their personal level of preparedness for professional practice in the new graduate year. It is a formal requirement of registration with AHPRA that every registered nurse and registered midwife maintains a professional portfolio. At least 20 hours of CPD must be completed each year. Transcripts and documentary evidence need to be retained. Regularly assessing your portfolio helps you to develop the knowledge, competence and expertise required to work in the practice setting of your choice.
