    Required:
At the end of the trimester students will be asked to formulate a report from their
weekly learning .  This will involve evaluating and describing your own learning
experience in this assessment. This is known as reflective practice. We
recommend you start your learning about reflective practice by reviewing a
presentation titled, "Getting started with reflective practice" 1 . You can also access a
written document here 2  that highlights a basic introduction of reflective practice with
examples to help you get started or to continue on with your reflective writing
journey [Note: Prepared by The Learning Centre and reproduced in original format,
The University of New South Wales 2010].
    What is reflective practice?
Reflective practice is about taking personal responsibility for actions, self-reflecting
and critiquing your own performance and identifying and planning future
development needs. In order to take personal responsibility for your actions you
need to keep evidence of this as you work on this assessment. This could be in the
form of journal entries, images or audio content. By having this evidence you will be
able to reflect back on it and critique your own performance. Once you have read
some of the resources about reflective practice the next stage is deciding what to
    write down.
    What should I write about?

The reflection could address a number of issues below:
    •  Never thought of setting up a personal financial plan?
    •  Have always wanted to setup a business but never thought about it
    seriously?
    •  Do I independently research a topic in detail? Should I do this but can’t be
    bothered?
    •  Over the last few weeks my strengths and weaknesses I have
identified and how do I accommodate these in this my studies later?
    •  What was my expectation before I am enrolled in MAA104, has the
    unit delivered what I expected?
    •  What are my thoughts on where this assessment will assist my future
    study?
    •  Do I engage in discussion about the assessment for the workbook exercises
and collaborate with other students during class time?
    •  Do you conduct yourself in a professional manner? Are you on time to class,

do you prepare before class such as reading the text and notes?
    •  What have I previously learnt from another situation and how can it be
applied here? Eg: left an assignment to the last minute and got sick and
could not finish it by the due date. Working with a group member who
    doesn’t contribute to the work.
    •  Are you able to review prior learning (past experiences inside and outside
the classroom) in depth, to be able to reveal fully clarified meanings or
indicating broader perspectives about educational or life events?
    •  Has your thinking changed since starting this unit? If so how?
    •  What have you found inspiring, confusing, difficult, interesting and why?
    •  Questions you have and conclusions you have drawn.
    These are suggestions only.
Often students can find reflective writing challenging and are unsure of how to do
this and why it is important. Before attempting this section it is recommended that
    you review the resources available.
In what format should I produce these weekly entries?
The weekly entries can be produced in a range of formats. You can use a
combination of formats or just one. It is whatever suits you and you feel comfortable
using. Remember you will need to be able to access them later in the trimester.
These are some suggestions that you might like to select from when creating your
    weekly journal:
    •  you could make a video,
    •  record your thoughts using audio,
    •  use an exercise book,
You are also welcome to include anything else you wish to remember in your
journal. This can be in a number of formats such as a newspaper article, text,
pictures, videos (downloaded or created by you) or any other item (artefact) you
want. Artefacts can be anything you think displays your work/ideas/thoughts and
    ultimately your learning!
How long should each entry be?
At a minimum it is recommended you write 350 words per entry. This may vary as
some students may wish to make more than one entry per week. There is no
maximum amount, you are free to write as much as you wish to. Keep in mind you
will need put together a summary of your entries for submission in week 10 that will
    be approximately 1000 words.
This is a 2200 word essay, try to have subheadings to “break up” different issues.

    Final Submission
You will need to submit a text document in the drop box by the due date. If you are
using the portfolio to document your thoughts you still need to attach this to the
drop box as only you can see what is in your portfolio. What is contained in your
final submission will depend on what you have written about in your weekly entries.
Some of it will be exactly the same information but you will need to also reflect back
on what you have written and what you have learnt from this. For instance you
may have written about your strengths in week 3.At the end of the trimester when
you look back at what you wrote you may realise that they have now changed due
to the experiences you have had over the trimester.
    How will I be assessed?
As a student in Financial Literacy you have Course Learning Outcomes specific to
this unit which you will need to be able to demonstrate. You will be assessed on
how well you have met the criteria relating to the learning outcomes.
In this assessment you will need to demonstrate your achievement towards the
Course Learning Outcome ‘Self Management.’ This involves both reflection and
making independent intellectual connections. This involves making explicit
references to previous learning and applying an innovative (new and creative) way
that knowledge and those skills to demonstrate comprehension and performance in
novel situations. You need to be able to review and analyse prior learning (past
experiences inside and outside of the classroom) in depth to reveal significantly
changed perspectives about educational and life experiences, which provide
foundation for expanded knowledge, growth, and maturity over time.
    Where can I get assistance?
Further explanation and links to the resources can be found at the support website:
http://www.bmgtportfolios.com/reflective.html. During orientation you would have
been introduced to this task and heard about the resources and support you can
access in assisting you (mentors, drop-in station, online videos and guides).
    GOOD LUCK!
