Assessment 2
Case Study (30%)
Due: End of Week 13 (Midnight Friday)
It is important that students can demonstrate their understanding of the material presented in
Construction Plant and Equipment including different types and sizes of plant and equipment used in
contemporary construction.
Overview
This case study, expected to be done in groups comprised of 2 students, requires students to find a
substantial local construction project where civil construction and/or earthmoving and/or earthworks
are underway, for example, a minesite, road construction project, residential sub-division, CBD
basement excavation or regional shopping centre.
The objective of the Construction Plant & Equipment Case Study Assessment is to encourage students
to reflect on the content of lectures so that they fully understand the subject. It is designed to
encourage students to undertake further research and learning in support of lecture material provided
by lecturers and to start to apply their new knowledge to specific situations. Students must also
appreciate that a small domestic site with a Bobcat digging a trench is not sufficient scope for this
assignment.
Scope
Students are to submit an individual professionally formatted, structured and referenced report.
The submission is to provide a report on the site that the student has identified that discusses the site
and its activities in relation to the plant and equipment being utilised on site including, but not limited
to:
• The Site Location and Project;
• Date & Time of Visit including climatic conditions;
• Identify the Plant & Equipment on site;
• The activities being undertaken by the particular pieces of equipment (photos are
recommended);
• Speculate on why the particular equipment identified is being used;
• What equipment can they identify that might be more appropriate for the tasks identified
and why or why the equipment being utilized is the right piece of equipment;
• Time study on the ongoing processes (important component).

• Study on the suitability of the fleet size (important component).
Students should bear in mind that the objective of the case study is for students to examine the
different processes, capabilities and performance outputs and productivity of pieces of equipment and
the technical, safety and economic factors that have to be considered when deciding which particular
type of plant or equipment to select for a particular construction project. Again, it is emphasized that
a small domestic site with a single piece of small equipment will not provide sufficient scope for this
assessment.
